Why is it important to store opened wine properly?

Once you open a bottle, wine is exposed to air, starting the oxidation process. Oxidation can alter the wine, reduce its quality, and spoil its taste. That’s why proper storage after opening is crucial.

How to store opened wine in the fridge

  • Keep the bottle upright: This reduces the surface area exposed to air, slowing oxidation.

  • Use a cork or special stopper: If the original cork isn’t available, there are stoppers designed to create a vacuum or seal the bottle better.

  • Store in the fridge: Low temperature helps preserve the wine for several days.

How long does opened wine last?

  • White and rosé wines: Usually 3-5 days if stored properly in the fridge.

  • Red wine: 2-3 days; better to store in the fridge even though red wine is typically served at room temperature.

  • Sparkling wine: Much more sensitive; best consumed the same day or at most the next day with a special stopper for sparkling wines.

Alternative preservation methods

  • Vacuum wine pumps: Remove air from the bottle and slow down oxidation.

  • Nitrogen capsules: Replace air inside the bottle with inert nitrogen, preventing oxidation.

What else can you do with leftover wine?

If after a few days the wine is no longer good for drinking, don’t throw it away! You can use it in cooking. Wine adds depth and richness to many recipes, such as sauces, marinades, risottos, and even when cooking meats and vegetables. This way, you creatively use leftover wine and reduce waste.
